The Best Beaches in South Devon
Perfect for relaxation, activities or games
We are truly spoilt for beaches in South Devon, with a great range of options depending on what you are looking for. Some are rustic and rarely visited by tourists, while others are have fantastic facilities and activities on offer.
The Blue Lagoon is our private cove which is only accessible to guests staying at Carswell Farm Holiday Cottages. The walk to the cove is reasonably challenging and not suitable for everyone, however we highly recommend visiting the Blue Lagoon and spending a few hours enjoying the beach and its beautiful surroundings.
Our top tip: Take a packed lunch and your swimsuit – the water can be beautifully clear and offers great swimming conditions.
Guests will find directions in their holiday cottage.
Wadham Beach is the nearest beach to Carswell Farm Holiday Cottages, a peaceful option which is good for swimming (but please take normal precautions) and rockpooling at low tide.
Found just off the South West Coast Path between St Anchorites Rock and The Tea House, the beach can be reached on foot in about 20 minutes.
Please note:
- The hill back up from the beach is quite steep and the walk back to your cottage will take longer so be prepared!
- The track leading down to Wadham Beach may be overgrown and uneven so please take care. It may be muddy and slippery when wet so be careful during or after rain.
- Part of the beach is used by naturists – they are usually found on the second beach to your left, past the chicane of rocks.
Mothecombe Beach (officially called Meadowsfoot) is privately owned by the Flete Estate but access is allowed at any time. The beach can be accessed by walking about 1 hour along the coast path and has 150 acres of sand at low tide – spectacular and an absolute must. Visitors can also wade across the River Erme to the neighbouring Wonwell Beach. Dogs are not allowed on the main beach during the summer months.
Parking is available at a small charge in a field by the fantastic Schoolhouse Restaurant. To reach the beach by car, drive to Battisborough Cross then turn right and follow the signs for Mothecombe.

Bantham is one of the most popular beaches in the area for surfers and families alike, located on the opposite side of the River Avon to Bigbury-on-Sea. The shallow waters are perfect for children to play and learn to surf, while a huge area of sand is exposed at low tide. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months.
